Rutgers HPO/RWJ Volunteer Intensive Program (VIP)

The Rutgers Health Professions Office and Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital have collaborated to create a unique volunteer opportunity for Rutgers, New Brunswick students. It offers current Rutgers-New Brunswick undergraduate students the opportunity for a limited one-semester volunteer commitment of 50 hours. The HPO/RWJ VIP program is offered three times a year to coincide with the academic calendar (fall, spring, summer).  When accepted into the program, volunteers will commit to one four-hour shift in a selected department for a minimum of 50 hours of service in 15 weeks.  

The upcoming spring 2024 VIP rotation will run from January  16, 2024 - April 29, 2024

Applications will be available from the HPO: November  14, 2023 - December  8,  2023 

To be eligible for this program, students must have the following:

  • A file in the Health Professions Office for at least a month, along with at least one recorded appointment with an HPO advisor (on HPOdrome)
  • Completed at least one semester at Rutgers, New Brunswick (with grades on your transcript)
  • Completed at least one semester of General Biology or General Chemistry with a grade of B or better. If students have AP credit or transfer credit for those courses, they must have a least one graded science course on their Rutgers transcript with a B or better.
  • Must have an overall AND science GPA (on HPOdrome) of 3.0 or higher

Interested students meeting the above qualifications should forward their name, RUID#, and preferred location of either New Brunswick OR Somerset (Somerset - limited availability in Somerset) to Christine Centrone (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) at Rutgers HPO to be prescreened. Qualified students will be forwarded the application and will be required to attend an application orientation meeting by Zoom.  

Applicants must complete and submit all requirements to RWJ Volunteer Services department, prior to January 12, 2024 for New Brunswick and prior to January 5, 2024 for Somerset, to ensure readiness for the program start date. The required RWJ medical clearance involves many steps and can take up to 4 weeks to complete. Please allow enough time to get this completed before the deadline.

 

 If you do not meet the above qualifications, however, would still like to volunteer at Robert Wood Johnson, you are encouraged to complete the respective adult volunteer profile form.
