Alumni Shadowing/Mentoring Program        (requirements updated Spring 2026)

The Alumni Shadowing/Mentoring Program offered by the HPO has several health professionals who have agreed to offer Rutgers New Brunswick students a variety of different experiences.

Experiences include:
• In-person shadowing
• Virtual shadowing
• 1:1 Mentoring (virtually or in person)

The HPO Alumni Shadowing/Mentoring program rotations coincide with the academic calendar (fall, spring, and summer).  Qualified students are assigned to one rotation.  Due to the relatively small number of doctors/dentists currently participating, we currently limit the shadowing/mentoring opportunities to only currently enrolled Sophomores, Juniors or Seniors with the following credentials:

  • PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS:

  • 1. Currently enrolled RU-NB student in Sophomore, Junior or Senior year
  • 2. An HPO file for at least one month
  • 3. At least one recorded appointment with an HPO advisor (on HPOdrome)
  • 4. A current resume uploaded on the HPOdrome
  • 5. At least a 3.0 Overall and HPOdrome Science GPA; with at least 1 completed semester if you are a transfer student
  • 6. Both Organic Chemistry 1 & 2 courses completed with both grades of B or better on transcript

How can I apply?

  • Step 1) Read the attached slideshow (in fact, this will be useful for any shadowing/mentoring experience) (click here for Powerpoint slideshow)
  • Step 2) Go to your HPOdrome Profile Page to upload your current resume (Note, your shadowing request will not be processed until a resume is uploaded.)
  • Step 3) Go to the “Enroll in Shadowing” link (also located on your HPOdrome Profile Page), read and agree to the Terms and Conditions, and then proceed to make your selection of 3 choices.
  • Step 4) Carefully read each of the opportunity descriptions you have selected and the start and end dates of the rotation.  Make sure that you are available for any specific days/times of the week required for the opportunity and/or will have no issues with transportation to the locations listed for those opportunities.
  • Step 5) Hit the submit button

What happens next?

  • Step 1) Your application will automatically be submitted to the HPO.
  • Step 2) If you meet all the criteria listed above, the status of your request will be changed to “Approved”.
  • Step 3) It may take a week or so for us to reach the doctor. Once the doctor approves, you will be contacted, by the HPO regarding how to proceed (this may vary among doctors). Your status will be changed to “Active”.
  • Step 4) You have TWO weeks from the day you are notified by the HPO to reach out to your assigned doctor/student to set up your mentorship/observership schedule.
  • Step 5) The assigned rotation will conclude at the end of the semester.

These health professionals have graciously offered their time to participate in this Alumni Shadowing/Mentorship Program.    So if you decide within the first two-week timeframe not to take advantage of your assigned opportunity, please email Tracey Hasse (This email address is being protected from spambots.
