The Postbaccalaureate Premedical Track:

Rutgers Post-Baccalaureate Pre-Health program is appropriate for career changers.  It is not a record enhancing program.  The program serves students who hold a bachelor’s degree and wish to apply to medical or dental school but who did not take the pre-med/pre-dent requirements as part of their undergraduate degree.

Students accepted into the program receive priority registration consideration for the basic, required science courses.  Qualified students may also apply for fast track acceptance programs to either UMDNJ in Newark or with Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Brunswick.  Students accepted into the program may utilize the full array of services available through the Rutgers Health Professions Office, including electronic file management, personal advising, monthly newsletter, and the committee interview and composite letter of recommendation.  There is also a thriving Post-Baccalaureate PreHealth Student Association.

Requirements for 2010 Applicants:

·         The applicant must be a U.S. Citizen or hold a Green Card.

·         Applicants must have a B.A. from an American university or college.

·         An Undergraduate GPA of no less than 3.2

·         Interviews for qualified candidates will be held in February and March.

·         Accepted Candidates will be notified by March 15th.

Continued Matriculation in the Program:

·         Accepted students will be required to take one year of biology, chemistry, and physics work at Rutgers (without repeating previous coursework).

·         Accepted students must take at least 21 credits at Rutgers in order to receive the full support of the Health Professions Committee and to be considered for the Fasttrack program.

Saint Peter's University Hospital Physician Shadowing Program:

The Health Professions Office is proud to announce a new Premedical Physician Shadowing Program at Saint Peter’s University Hospital in New Brunswick.  This program is open to rising juniors  who have a minimum GPA of 3.6.  Candidates must have satisfactorily completed General Biology, General Chemistry and Organic Chemistry along with having a file with the Health Professions Office with at least two letters.

It is a wonderful opportunity that will give participants a unique opportunity to observe the practice of medicine.  Participants will be paired with a physician mentor and will be given an opportunity to observe the physician on rounds, in the office, watching certain procedures, attending departmental weekly Grand Rounds and participating in the medical student/resident conferences daily.

The Office for Diversity and Academic Success in the Sciences (ODASIS) has a threefold mission to:

1.Increase the numbers of Hispanic, African-American, and EOF students majoring in the sciences by providing a more supportive environment;
2.enhance their levels of academic achievement; and
3.increase their entry into graduate or professional schools or in their chosen fields in the work force.

The ODASIS offers several programs to further its mission. The Success in the Sciences Program provides academic advising, career counseling, motivational workshops, and assistance in gaining enriching educational experiences. An important program component is a tutorial project, cosponsored by Rutgers College, which gives students cocurricular support in key math and science courses.

The Biomedical Careers Program (BCP), offered jointly by Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey (New Brunswick) and the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School (UMDNJ-RWJMS), is a summer enrichment program. Participants take science courses, attend seminars, gain experience at a health-care facility, and undertake research with a faculty mentor. Ninety percent of participants in this program have earned their bachelor's degree; of these, more than half have earned professional or other degrees.

The ACCESS-MED Program provides academic and other support to students applying to any medical or dental school. Of special note is their opportunity also to gain early admission to UMDNJ-RWJMS during their senior year and to begin medical school courses while completing their undergraduate degrees. The ACCESS-MED Program is a consortial venture involving Rutgers, UMDNJ_RWJMS, and Seton Hall University.
